We recently moved from Edmonton to Cambridge, MA with Trans Canada movers. The pick up was smooth. There were a few oddities that made us slightly nervous – no contract until just a couple days before the move, needing a photo of our credit card – but it turned out fine. The drop off was less smooth. We were arriving in Cambride to an unfurnished flat, and had been assured that our goods would arrive Monday. We emailed back and forth on the weekend and there was no mention of any delays. On Monday afternoon we called and were told that our stuff was still in Canada with no plan of it being delivered yet. We had to scramble (we didn’t have a car) to get an air mattress and crib for us and our toddler. While it was frustrating that it didn’t arrive on Monday, it would have been so much easier had we been told that this was likely to happen before Monday afternoon. On Wednesday we were told that it would definitely arrive on Friday, and that they would call when it was past the border. On Friday, after waiting all day and paying $40 to reserve parking for a truck, (and having our phone calls ignored – they were only answered after we called from a different phone!), we were told the goods were still in Canada. Same story for Saturday. Our stuff finally arrived on Sunday afternoon – a week after it was supposed to – a week without any furniture. Once the movers arrived, they were great and it was very quick. There was some damage but nothing more than you would expect (and less than the $500 deductible). While I understand delays happen in this business, what was most stressful was the lack of communication. It also would have been nice to have been offered compensation for the extra expenses we incurred because of the lack of information and delay.

They quoted me a price of $4700 for a from Richmond VA. to Montreal CA.. When it was time for delivery they demanded $7200 or they wouldn’t unload. Not sure how their estimate was off by 60%, well I do now. They were payed to pack and load in Richmond. When we started unpacking we found they put in a large box, the lamp in one box and the lamp shade in another. Also in a large box just a regular toaster oven. In another large box there was a food processor and 6 glasses. So far none of the boxes unpacked are close to half full. Of the 15 boxes unpacked so far, I could have easily and safely packed the contents into 6 boxes.
They were rude and unprofessional. The delivery driver accused my wife of being drunk when she hadn’t had a drink all day. They did not have a crew available and they did not start unloading until 7PM. The driver threatened to leave several times to the point I called the dispatcher to keep him from leaving. They did not put the beds together as promised.
